SAINT PETRONILLA Virgin (1st century)

Among the Apostles' disciples, St. Petronilla shone like a bright star. No particular account of her actions was handed down, but her church and catacomb stand in testament to her sanctity among the apostles and martyrs. Thus, we may deduce that she did everything for God instead of self-gratification or self-aggrandizement.

St. Petronilla is said to have been a daughter of the apostle Saint Peter. From the Gospels, we know that St. Peter was married before his discipleship. St. Clement of Alexandria wrote that St. Peter's wife attained to the glory of martyrdom. However, whether St. Petronilla was St. Peter's spiritual or biological daughter is uncertain.

A basilica was built for St. Petronilla in the fourth century along the Ardeatine Way. Her relics were since transferred to St. Peter's Basilica. That she is a saint is due to the fact she prayed at every moment of the day (Psalm 88:1).
